Welcome to Nuru Association 1
Founded on December 8, 2025, Nuru Association 1 is a federally
and provincially registered Canadian nonprofit organization
headquartered in Toronto.
The word Nuru means “Light” in Swahili — a reflection of our
commitment to creating pathways of opportunity, belonging, and
hope for newcomers, refugees, immigrants, children, youth, and
families across Canada.
We are purpose-built to address systemic poverty, educational
barriers, social isolation, and integration challenges faced
by newcomer communities. Through compassionate support
systems, educational empowerment, mental wellness programs,
and cultural integration initiatives, we help families build
sustainable and meaningful futures.
How We Support Communities
We nurture future leaders by encouraging creativity, confidence, leadership skills, volunteerism, and positive community engagement among youth.
We empower single mothers with access to resources, mentorship, emotional support, and community connections that encourage stability, independence, and growth.
We create welcoming spaces where families can connect, build relationships, celebrate diversity, and feel part of a supportive community.
We help newcomer families adapt to life in Canada through language support, cultural orientation, community activities, and settlement guidance that foster confidence and inclusion.
Our programs promote emotional well-being, confidence, resilience, and healing through counseling support, wellness workshops, peer support groups, and safe community spaces.
We provide educational guidance, tutoring assistance, learning resources, mentorship programs, and youth empowerment initiatives to help children and young adults succeed academically and personally.

Newcomer Family Integration
This program helps immigrant and refugee families adjust to life in Canada through community orientation, cultural integration activities, and social support networks.
Education Support
We provide tutoring support, educational resources, mentorship, school readiness programs, and academic guidance for newcomer children and youth facing educational barriers.

Amina, a 14-year-old student who arrived in Canada with her family in early 2025, struggled to adjust to a new school system and language barriers. Through Nuru's academic tutoring and mentorship program, she received weekly support in math and English. At the same time, her mother participated in parent workshops that helped her better understand the school system and how to support Amina at home. Within months, Amina's confidence grew significantly. She began participating in class discussions, improved her grades, and joined a school club for the first time. Her family also accessed settlement and housing support through Nuru, helping them feel more stable and connected.
